Gerstenberger Selected in Second Round of 2009 MLS SuperDraft

Fullback selected 30th overall in Thursday's draft

Boston College and former Black Watch Premier (NY) standout Paul Gerstenberger has been selected by the 2008 Major League Soccer Champion Columbus Crew in the second round - 30th overall - of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft.

Gerstenberger registered 62 starts along the BC backline during his four-year collegiate career. The Schenectady, N.Y., resident totaled 18 points - four goals and 10 assists - in 66 career appearances.

He earned Atlantic Coast Conference All-Tournament Team honors during the team's run to the 2007 ACC Tournament title after stellar efforts in victories over Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. Gerstenberger tallied one goal and one assist in leading the Eagles to a 3-1 semifinal-round victory over the Hokies on Nov.

Gerstenberger starred for the Black Watch Premier (NY) Soccer Club after graduating from his local travel program, Colonie Soccer Club., at age 12. “I am so proud of his hard work, his commitment to the game and his family. He deserves this opportunity. I couldn’t be more proud of him,” stated former youth Coach and Director of Programming at Black Watch Premier Steve Freeman. “This is one step in Paul’s staircase of goals. He returns to his club colors, black and gold. The Club is a buzz right now. Paul came down to the facility last night and spoke to our U14s, U15s and U16s. Our players have an MLS team to back now that is for sure.”

Gerstenberger was identified and offered an Academy contract by the prestigious English Premier Club, Middlesbrough Football Club at age 14 after going on trial via Black Watch Premier. Following his return to the US, the US Under 18 National Team called him into camp out in Carson, California where he made the cut and competed for the USSF at the Milk Cup in Ireland and an international friendly event in Portugal. Most recently, Gerstenberger was a member of the US Under 23 Olympic Pool, but was not given an opportunity to compete in camp.
