Super Y League North American Finals 2008
Black Watch had an exciting 2008 Super Y season, finishing with three teams competing in the 10th annual Super Y-League North American Finals held November 20-25, 2008 in Tampa, FL, part of the USL SoccerFest. This is regarded as the top youth soccer event for the organization's 200-plus franchises and clubs, a truly unique North American soccer experience. Black Watch has had the honor of qualifying one or more teams in all of the past five seasons for this prestigious tournament. The three teams joining the ranks this year include the U14B Midlothians, U15B Highlanders and U16B Griffins.
Games were played in cool temperatures and overcast skies, at either the Ed Radice Park or Land O’ Lakes Rec Center in suburban Tampa. Not only was this the place for high level youth soccer action, the Players' Village located at the Ed Radice Sports Complex featured fun activities such as street soccer, a futsal field, a video game tournament, soccer tennis and more.
Below are some highlights from the tournament.

The Black Watch Midlothians U14 boys advanced to the North American Finals based on the play of their solid defense. They were the undefeated New England Champions and allowed just two more goals than Cal Odyssey on the other side of the country – while playing four more matches than the Californians. They pitched shutouts in 11 of their 14 matches including their two draws on the season: 0-0 with MPS Boston and three days later by the same score to Nordic. The Midlothians finished their Super Y-League season with a record of 12-0-2, scoring 31 goals. Their balanced units in the midfield and attacking-third led to their effective scoring. Coached by Jeff Rockmore and Dave MacVane, this team came together this year with high hopes which they have fulfilled beyond expectations. The players’ work ethic and tireless training have seen the side grow into one of the most respected teams in the region, garnering many tournament wins and strong premier league play.
Although not faring as well in the Finals as they did during regular league play (0-2-1), their outstanding performance was proven by low-scoring games, meeting and losing to their next closest standing national team Cal Odyssey by a single goal.

The Highlanders were tough competitors in the New England U15B division of the Super Y-League, where the team was in contention for the division championship until the final weekend of the season. The team started off strong with 5 straight wins, then struggled against top-ranked Ottawa losing both league games to them, and then tied and lost in two very competitive matches against Seacoast.
Due to second-ranked Seacoast’s withdrawal from the tournament, the Highlanders finished with the next best record of 7-4-1 to qualify them to take the second spot representing the New England division in the Finals.
“The growth of the team was outstanding,” stated Head Coach Steve Freeman. “We came together as a team adding several new players at this level is very difficult. I am pleased with the development of the team, and I am excited about where we are headed.”
The Highlanders struggled in the table at Nationals losing all three matches, but were competitive overall at the event losing two tight matches to FC Fredericksburg and Mountain FC. The Highlanders competed without one of their scoring threats, Ercan KIlic who has been sidelined since September with an ACL reconstruction. Andrew Chan and Tyler Pomakoy were standouts throughout the event.

The Griffins have lost one regular season match in three Super Y League regular seasons. In 2006, they went 12-0-2, and in 2007 ran a record of 11-1-2. Finishing in the top 5 of Nationals with a victory over the New Jersey Rangers to go 2-1-1 in the event and 7 points. The Griffins were led by outstanding play by several key members including SYL All-Tournament Team Selection Teddy DeConno. Leading the attack were Noah Cadet, David Clemens and Tony Campagnano. Taylor Esper, Zach Colbert, Sean Murphy and Caz Rafalik held down the middle of the park while Andrew Marino, Pete Walsh, Jack Bouchard and Adam Shamlian defended the flanks. GK Nate Kishbaugh led the Griffins in the goal with two shutouts. “The group rallied together and earned the results they deserved,” stated Head Coach Steve Freeman. “We had CZ Elite down 2-1 with 15 minutes to play with a chance to move on to the semi-finals, but we just didn’t have the composure or experience to close the match. I hope this experience will enable us to grow in that direction.”
